UK Oil & Gas Industry's Education, Skills and Training Initiative
OPITO
-
The
Oil & Gas Academy
On 22 November 2007, the UK oil and gas industry announced the creation
of its nation-wide, employer-led, Oil & Gas Academy. The Academy will
allow the industry to consolidate and improve its work in generating and
developing the talent needed to sustain the long-term future of the UK
continental shelf (UKCS) and export learning internationally.
Funded by the industry, the Oil & Gas Academy will underpin and support
the efforts and resources that employers throughout the UK are currently
investing in workforce development to ensure that the UKCS remains at
the forefront of offshore expertise and technology.
The Oil & Gas Academy will bring together resources and know-how from
the Offshore Training Foundation (OTF), the charitable trust which was
formed to promote education and training, with the excellent track
record of OPITO in standards and skills development.
Though building on OPITO’s current strengths, the Oil & Gas Academy will
have a much wider remit so several people will be recruited, whose
knowledge and skills sets will complement existing expertise. The
Academy’s strong, professional expertise will allow it to work with the
industry to identify and agree the action required to meet the
industry’s needs.
The Academy will work with schools, colleges and universities on a
shared agenda of encouraging greater uptake of mathematics, science and
engineering subjects to secure the feedstock the industry will require
in the future. The Academy will continue to support the development of
safety, technical and leadership skills within the industry in response
to identified need. Training standards and quality assurance on training
delivery both here and around the world will also be advanced through
the Academy.
The Academy will also continue to contribute to the wider national
skills and education policy agenda and share good practice as a member
of Cogent, the Sector Skills Council (SSC).
