Brown field - a mature oil or gas field (as opposed to 'green field')
CDA - Common Data Access Ltd
CFCs - Chlorofluorcarbons
CH4 - Methane

CNG - Compressed Natural Gas
CO2 - Carbon Dioxide

Facilities - process plant, machinery and equipment used in the production of oil or gas
Farm-in - buying into a share of an existing licence, usually by paying for or undertaking some services, e.g. drilling a well, thus diluting the shares of existing licence holders
Finder well - a quick to drill, economic well to establish the presence of hydrocarbons with minimal impact
FishSafe - electronic warning device for fishermen, identifying underwater equipment and pipelines
Foresight Report - report, undertaken for OPITO, examining future skills requirements for the industry
FPSO - Floating Production, Storage and Offloading (vessel)
GHG - Greenhouse Gas
GMB - General, Municipal and Boilermakers Union
Habitats Directive - European Law relating to the habitats of species
HFCs - Hydrofluorocarbons
HSC - Health & Safety Commission
HSE - Health & Safety Executive
IADC - International Association of Drilling Contractors
ILT - Industry Leadership Team (the industry part of PILOT)

IMO - International Maritime Organisation, a UN body

Installation - typically, a drilling rig or an oil/gas production platform/vessel, as defined in the Mineral Workings (Offshore Installations) Act 1971 and the Offshore Installations (Safety Case) Regulations 1992

ISO 14001 - International standard for Environmental Management Systems
ITF - Industry Technology Facilitator

Kyoto protocol - international protocol for reducing emissions of GHGs
Licensing round - offer made by government to oil and gas companies to bid for rights to explore for oil and gas

LIFT - Licence Initiative for Trading
LOGIC - Leading Oil and Gas Industry Competitiveness
Lord Cullen - chairman of the enquiry into the Piper platform disaster
Lord Donaldson - chairman of the enquiries into the Braer and Sea Empress tanker accidents
LPG - Liquid Petroleum Gas
N2O - Nitrous Oxide
NET - National Electro-Technical (training organisation)
NGO - Non-Governmental Organisation
NOx - oxides of nitrogen
NOVA - a venture capital fund for new technology
NSDG - North Sea Decommissioning Group
NTO - National Training Organisation
OCA - Offshore Contractors' Association
OCIMF - Oil Companies International Marine Forum

Offshore Forum - joint government, NGOs and industry forum

Operator - company appointed by the co-venturers in an oil and gas licence to manage the exploration for and, if successful, production of oil and/or gas on behalf of the co-venturers

OSPAR - Oslo Paris (Convention)
OSRL - Oil Spill Response Ltd
OPRC - Oil Pollution Preparedness Response Convention (international convention)
OTC - Operations and Technical Committee (of UKOOA)

PFCs - Perfluorocarbons
PILOT - Government led successor to OGITF
ppm - parts per million
Produced water - water which is produced with oil and gas from a reservoir
R&D - research and development
RDA - Regional Development Agency
Recovery factor - proportion of oil or gas which is recovered from a reservoir
Renewables - energy sources which are renewable: wind, solar, hydro and wave power
Reservoir modelling - simulation, usually by computer, of the geological structure or behaviour of an oil or gas reservoir
Safety Case - formal statement, required by law, of how an operator intends to manage an installation safely
Satellite fields - smaller fields operated in conjunction with larger fields whose facilities the smaller fields use
scfpd - standard cubic feet per day
SCM - Supply Chain Management
SCOPEC - (also known as EEMS) database of environmental emissions and discharges
SF6 - Sulphur Hexafluoride
SLT - Safety Leadership Team (ref. Step Change in Safety)
Smart wells - a well completion which has downhole components operated by electrical impulses from the surface
SME - Small or Medium Sized Enterprise
SOx - oxides of sulphur
SPE - Society of Petroleum Engineers
SSSG - Sectoral Sustainability Strategy Group
Step Change in Safety - a pan-industry safety initiative
Sub-sea tie back - a method of developing a satellite field or well(s), using subsea equipment tied back to a production platform or other installation
TEDS - The Early Decommissioning Synergy Group
Trade Partners UK - formerly BTI (British Trade International)
TUC - Trades Union Congress
UEA - University of East Anglia
UKCS - United Kingdom Continental Shelf
