4.3 Reducing Energy Used and Wastes Generated

Progress to date: achievements and difficulties encountered

Wastes brought to shore
Whilst quantities of waste from offshore are increasing, waste management facilities in the UK are becoming less available and at higher cost, a situation which is expected to worsen and is likely to be exacerbated in the near future by the implications of EU Directives. This has led to a higher priority being placed on waste management offshore, where considerable effort is made to segregate waste for re-use and recycling. In addition, operators are developing innovative waste management technology and practices. Examples include an energy from waste facility, a charitable wood recycling operation, a plastics recycling facility and trials of waste minimisation technology.

Sustainable Development Action Plan

Waste Management Including Future Drill Cuttings

We recognise the need to respond to the growing pressure on landfill sites in Scotland. We commit to working with stakeholders, including specialist waste management companies, local authorities and suppliers to help develop a long-term strategy for waste management in Grampian and the other regions. We will expand the UKOOA waste working group and have asked it to make recommendations in 2001. The well operations committee is investigating the issue of future drill cuttings and will finalise its recommendations in 2001.

Energy Efficiency

All UKOOA member companies recognise that better energy efficiency reduces emissions, reduces depletion of natural resources and makes good business sense. The challenge we face is to continue to find ways to reduce energy consumption in all our operations. The options available are significant and can range from: cogeneration projects (in which steam and electricity are produced simultaneously); flare reduction including gas sales projects; improved reliability and shutdown co-ordination, to the use of low energy lighting in offices. Led by UKOOA's Energy & Environment Policy Group, we are committed to reviewing energy use and to maintaining efforts to improve energy efficiency.
