2. Social sustainability
Our Strategic Objective
To conduct our business with full recognition of our contribution and responsibility to the society in which we operate. We will strive to achieve continual improvement in the safety and working conditions of all who are in our industry, engage with local stakeholders and other users of the sea, and support local authorities and local communities to plan ahead during this mature phase of UKCS development.

Industry safety record - some inter-industry comparisons
Annual statistics published by the Health & Safety Commission show the offshore industry position compared to other industries, based on the combined rate of fatal, major and three day injuries, as 16th in 1996-7, 15th in 1997-8, 13th in 1998-9 and 19th in 1999-2000 (where 1st represents the poorest record). The offshore industry has a better safety record than the following: mining and quarrying, post and telecommunications, manufacture of basic metals, construction, and the manufacture of motor vehicles and trailers, for example.
