Sustainable Development Strategy
Achievements to date, closure of redundant
and introduction of new indicators
The 63 indicators identified in the 2001 strategy were
reported upon in 2003, ultimately achieving better than
90% completion within the period. Recent reports show
five year periods for the quantitative indicators, to
illustrate progression. Key achievements to date are
noted in the following table:

The indicators from the 2003 strategy which are no
longer being tracked are:
-
"Outer wheel" indicators where measures are
beyond the boundary conditions of this report,e.g. global R&D, product benefi ts and
environmental impacts, profits for shareholders,
investment in energy alternatives, new business
exports generated
- Indicators which tracked what has now become
business-as-usual in the UKCS sector or
standard statutory requirements, e.g.
environmental management systems with
independent verification (which has near 100%
coverage), social engagement of companies
(but now refer to individual corporate reports)
The new indicators introduced following the 2005 stakeholder dialogue event recommendations include:
- Decommissioning: we were asked to articulate the forward picture, to track actions on the
wellhead and structures removal and to provide
insight into addressing technology and legacy
issues
- Asset infrastructure integrity: for safety,
stewardship and re-use potential (e.g. for CO2
sequestration or renewables)
- Workforce capacity and capability: labour
market issues, supporting new entrants and
developing a skills legacy
- Noise: concern about industry effects on
cetaceans
- Business practices and corporate reports
references
Other points which also came out of this event and have
been addressed to some extent within the strategy are:
- Environment: include monitoring activity, strategic R&D plans and UKOOA's view on marine planning (to inform the development of new legislation)
- Historical perspectives: achievements and
learning, means to normalise data (where
appropriate)
- In general: more context, indication of goals and commentary of how the measures illustrate progress
