Emergency Response

Learning event

On 16 June 2009, the companies and organisations involved in responding to the North Sea Flight 85N helicopter tragedy on 1 April came together to share lessons learned from the tragedy. This meeting has been summarized in a short briefing paper which sets out some of the key lessons that can be applied across the industry, including lessons that came out from the Morecambe Bay tragedy in 2006. Handling of emergency locator beacons

Several types of emergency locator beacons are used to help locate people in the event of a helicopter ditching in the UK continental shelf (UKCS). When these are used by passengers, they are known as personal locator beacons (PLBs), but are also located on pilots, life rafts and the helicopter itself.

In March 2010, Oil & Gas UK published guidance for offshore rescue crews on the correct handling of emergency locator beacons. This is available here.
