Licensing

The UKCS licensing system has been active for over 40 years and the area is defined under the Continental Shelf Act, 1964. While the Petroleum Act, 1998 states that all rights to UK petroleum sources belong to the Crown, the Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) has permission to grant licences to ‘search and bore for and get’ petroleum. DECC provides comprehensive information on licensing on the UK continental shelf (UKCS) here.
