VHF Voice Rebroadcasting
Historically, air traffic service to offshore helicopters has been limited by the range of VHF radio voice communications. As the old rebroadcasting system had some gaps in coverage and original equipment was becoming obsolete, the system was upgraded in 2009.
It now uses an increased number of offshore platforms through which controllers can speak directly with helicopter crews via offshore radios linked to shore, significantly increasing the range of voice communication between helicopter and control tower. The new extension and upgrades ensure that the whole of the North Sea is now covered by voice communication.
