Safety Training

Minimum Industry Safety Training (MIST)

In 2007 Step Change in Safety set up a workgroup to improve safety performance by applying best practice training at a consistent level across industry in safety critical areas. The workgroup, in collaboration with OPITO, developed and implemented a Minimum Industry Safety Training (MIST) Standard to be applied by all across the UK offshore oil and gas sector.

By March 2011, 90 per cent of the UK offshore workforce had completed the MIST programme and were trained to a known minimum level of safety knowledge.

Alignment of safety training across North-West Europe

North Sea oil and gas trade associations recognise the safety training given in each of the countries as stated in the most recent Memorandum of Agreement, signed in 2011 by the chief executives of Oil & Gas UK, OLF, NOGEPA and Danish Operators.

In order to monitor the alignment of standards in safety and survival training across North-West Europe, a matrix has been devised and is continually reviewed.

The latest versions of this matrix, and the Memorandum of Agreement, are available here.
