UKOOA Sustainability Strategy 2002 - First Report
1. Economic Sustainability
1.1 Operational Efficiencies through co-operation
Commitment No. 1 - Focus on recovery efficiency (also in 4.1)
"Our plan for 2001 is to assess and, if practicable, develop an industry-wide measurement to track progress in increasing the percentage of recoverable reserves from existing fields (the total reservoir recovery factor).  This indicator will be reviewed probably every three years (see also 4.1 Overall Impacts)."
Progress to date : achievements and difficulties encountered

As part of PILOT's work on brown fields (mature oil and gas fields), a benchmarking study was undertaken by Aberdeen University Petroleum Economics which identified that there are some 3.7 billion barrels of oil equivalent of potential reserves in brown fields, split between probable and possible categories (i.e., respectively, >50% and <50% probability of recovery).

The work programme of the brown fields group in 2002 is including a further and deeper refinement of the benchmarking, involving more operators and enabling progress to be tracked in upgrading reserves from possible to probable to proven (>90%). As part of this exercise, the brown fields group will focus its efforts on sharing knowledge and good practice, as the main tools for achieving increased recovery. It is intended that this will lead to the development of indicators.

(Note: PILOT is the joint government-industry body formed to implement the recommendations contained in "A Template for Change", the report of a government-industry task force in 1999, published by DTI. It has set a number of goals for the industry for 2010).
